Scope and ContentVolume containing unpublished manuscript text and drawings by Daniel Grose prepared as a supplement to his uncle Francis Grose’s ‘Antiquities of Ireland’, published in two volumes in 1791.
The volume includes a title page, with apposite verses from Byron, an introductory text and 88 individual paintings with accompanying text. The painting were prepared in the period 1823 – 38. However, many of them are based on drawings and sketches going back as far as 1792.
Each painting is executed in ink with ink washes and watercolour. All are surrounded by a black border in heavy ink. The size of the paintings is comparable to the size of those prepared for the 1791 publication suggesting that it was the intention that this volume be published too.
An edition of the volume, edited by Roger Stalley, was published by the Irish Architectural Archive in 1991.
